Exo Terra Equatorial Forest Floor is a multi-layered natural substrate that allows you to mimic the bedding of an equatorial forest. Forest litter is one of the most characteristic features of equatorial forests. It usually consists of two basic layers:

A top layer composed mainly of leaves.
A base layer containing organic matter - usually decomposed leaves and wood.

In Exo Terra substrate, the surface layer contains sun-dried decorative leaves that come from a renewable source. With this decorative layer you can create a substrate cover that is found in natural equatorial forests. The soft layer of leaves makes it easier for animals to create shelter. A top layer covering the correct substrate facilitates moisture retention and prevents the soil from drying out. Biodegradable ardisia leaves are completely chemical-free and can be safely composted.

The base layer, on the other hand, contains rich organic matter from ground coconut shells, also from a renewable source. This is a completely natural, ecological and biodegradable substrate with excellent hygroscopic properties. It is an excellent substrate for tanks planted with live plants and high humidity loving reptiles, amphibians or invertebrates. Its ability to retain water, natural root hormones and anti-fungal properties make it an excellent substrate for plants. The substrate consists of a mixture of short fibre and different sized pieces of coconut peat, from coarse granules to fine granules, giving excellent drainage and aeration to the plant root system.

The cover of leaves allows the base layer to retain moisture, thus acting as a natural ecosystem in which beneficial micro-organisms can break down organic waste while reducing unpleasant odours.
The substrate has been heat-treated, allowing bacteria to be eliminated.

Notes:
The base layer should be 5-10 cm high. The substrate should be soaked or wetted with water until the correct moisture content is reached in the tank. The prepared substrate should be thoroughly covered with a layer of leaves. Moisture levels are best controlled by electronic moisture meters. The substrate conducts heat well even when dry. The substrate should be cleaned locally daily, while a total substrate change is recommended as needed or every 2-3 months.
